Artist's Statement

The Things that Move Me.

I believe that printmaking instilled a respect for process as well as an appreciation of the unexpected in my art.  I strive to maintain similar elements of process and chance in my paintings.  Using a minimum of brushstrokes I try to create as much energy and complexity as possible to draw the viewer in.  Rather than focus on a fully preconceived idea of the finished work, I prefer to add and improvise around a descriptive framework based on my sketches and photographs.  Manipulating perspective, color, pattern and texture, I react to the way the colors and brushstrokes build upon one another.

I spend a lot of time outdoors, scouting subjects for my paintings and I paint the things that move me, large or small.  I seek to identify the uncommon elements in otherwise common scenes.  Sometimes these elements are subtle, but in painting them, I strive to communicate the emotion created by their discovery.  I am inspired by post-impressionist and modern, regionalist painters. My goal is to move beyond strict representationalism to extend the viewers concept of what is natural.  I hope my paintings convey the hidden complexity in what one sees in everyday life.
